Time is right to switch Man Utd's tactical setup - Amorim states.

Man Utd skipper Bruno Fernandes was among seven first-team stars to miss the Boxing Day win against Newcastle.

Boss Ruben Amorim contends that switching Manchester United's tactical system due to public noise would have been "the finish" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle, Amorim abandoned his trademark back three setup with wing-backs and instead field an orthodox four-man defense shielded by two defensive midfielders.

By his own admission this effectively transformed into a back six in the final phase as his side clung on for a victory - securing just their second-ever clean sheet of the campaign.

Although he once notably said that not even the highest authority could pressure him to adjust his approach, Amorim maintains the capacity to experiment with varied formations has remained part of his long-term vision.

Nevertheless, he stresses he could solely make the switch when his team were performing well enough - lest it would seem as if he was succumbing to outside criticism.

"When I arrived here last season, I realized perhaps I didn't possess the personnel to perform effectively in a back three, but it was the beginning of a process," he said.

"We were trying to establish an style. Currently is a different moment. We lack a lot of players, and we must adapt, so they see why we are making changes.

"It is not because of the demands of journalists, or the supporters.

"When media talk about changing the system constantly, I can't change because the players will believe I'm changing because of external voices and I feel that is the end for the coach.

"Once we are performing strongly in our preferred setup, then is the opportunity to evolve.

"This will help us become a more complete team because when our full complement of personnel are back, we are not intending to use three defenders all the time."

Availability Challenges Continue

Having just two victories in eight games before beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is accurate to claim his team have been playing well.

He is, however, working with a depleted roster, with multiple senior stars already confirmed absent for the forthcoming home game against winless Wolves.

That total will rise if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to recover the injury that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves match, even though he is reportedly pushing his manager to allow him to make a comeback following his muscle problem.

"Bruno is already insisting he needs to train," said Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. Definitely not. That's definitive."

The Captain's Role Remains

Nevertheless, the Portuguese star will probably still be deeply engaged, as while most injured stars watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was seen monitoring the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his captain to continue offering input.

"He is a leader," he stated. "He cannot be that guy that when he is absent, he's not talking and offering advice. He's constantly communicating. That's why he's the captain.

"He has negative aspects sometimes - the way he gesticulates - but he has a lot of good things. After he recovers, he goes to observe the other guys practicing. There are a many aspects that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he wants my job or not, but he's a leader. The guy is a leader."

Recovery Schedule for Injured Players

Although the specific date for Fernandes' return - and that of fellow unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is uncertain, by the end of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
